Beyond the Reef, a Coast That Answers Back

There is a stretch of coast where the jungle walks straight into the water, where a ruined tower still watches the horizon and nobody remembers who built it. The people who live there do not fish the sea. They negotiate with it.

Their wardens wear the sea itself: shells, coral, knotted nets, a conch raised on a spear like a standard. The pelicans follow them because pelicans have always known which humans are worth following. And in the shade behind the dunes, two woolly companions wait, small, round and entirely unbothered by any of it.
