He came home to Ithaca. He held Penelope again. And it was not enough. Dante found Ulysses burning among the fraudulent counselors, not for the Trojan Horse, but for one final sin: convincing his old, tired crew to sail past the Pillars of Hercules, into waters no living man was meant to cross.

Five months into the forbidden ocean, a dark mountain rose from the horizon, and the sea rose with it. This sculpture captures the exact instant the whirlwind takes him: Ulysses suspended between sky and abyss, the Sirens, the Ocean made flesh, coiling around the hero as the waters close over the mad flight forever.

The Coil of the Ocean From the side, the trap reveals itself: a great siren tail winds around the mast, ropes bite into flesh, and the waves of the base rise to swallow everything. Sculptural flow made for dramatic paint schemes.
